Anthony Smith, Ph.D., is the Executive Director/Founder of Alase Center for
Enrichment. Dr. Smith has been involved in the mental health field for over 10
years. He is a Licensed Psychologist and certified Health Services Provider in
North Carolina. He is currently on the faculty at the Duke University Medical
School as a professor of Behavioral Science to medical residents and physician
assistants. Most recently he worked for the Duke Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
providing a host of psychological services including short-term individual and
couples therapy, crisis management, managed care gate-keeping including
authorization of psychiatric hospitalization and case management, fitness for
duty evaluations and psychological testing. Prior to establishing the Alase
Center for Enrichment, he was also a consultant/psychologist at the Kemetic
Institute Counseling and Consultation Services, a private practice located in
Raleigh, North Carolina. His duties there included providing psychological
assessment, long- and short-term individual and group therapy for adolescents,
couples and families. He also performed disability claims evaluations as
requested by the state of North Carolina and provided consultation to
individuals, schools and professional organizations on a variety of mental
health-related topics. Previously he was the director of a state funded
substance abuse center, the John A. Hyman Substance Abuse Center in Warrenton,
NC for two and a half years. While in this position he was responsible for the
administration of client cases, supervision of staff members, and management of
the financial aspects of the program. Dr. Smith also has worked in a Federal and
State prison, a Veterans Affairs hospital and University Counseling Center. This
broad training allows him to work effectively with a wide variety of mental
health-related problems.
Dr. Smith received his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Counseling Psychology from
Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1996 and received a Master of Arts
Degree in Counseling Psychology also from Southern Illinois University in 1993.
He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame in 1991. He
is involved in several professional organizations including the Association of
Black Psychologists, American Psychological Association, and the North Carolina
Psychological Association. He is currently president of the Triangle Chapter of
the Association of Black Psychologists. |
